off to NYC

Fb-Button

Haven’t been able to finish proofing the images from this session but wanted to share one quick image that jumped right at me off the card. Not technically perfect but one of my absolute favorite ones. This is for the lovely mama with the most adorable boys. I so wanted to take him home and he was ready to… such a sweet little man! I photographed him when he was a wee ten month old and how he has grown! He also has an equally adorable little brother that I got to meet and photograph.

Off to pack my bags for my NYC trip tomorrow. I am looking forward to a photography workshop as well as a few portrait sessions with east coast families. I will be away through October 3rd and emails/calls will be answered on my return. It is gearing up to be a busy fall so please let me know soon if you would like to book a family or kids portrait session for the holidays. I don’t have any short story session offerings for the holidays yet and might do so on a limited basis since I have gotten requests. If you are interested please let me know via email and I will keep you posted once I have something in the works. Returning clients will have the opportunity to have first dibs on the spots. If you haven’t “liked” our facebook page please do so to check out sneak peek and other news.

what’s in the cards?

Have had a sluggish run blogging recently so I thought it was time for a share as I head out soon to the east coast. Love this family I photographed about a month ago. Our shoot was quite the adventure hiking out to a spot in Walnut Creek. The interesting thing is that you never know what is in the cards as the story tends to evolve along the way. At least that tends to be my shooting style. The kids were real troopers on our hike, even the new baby. Mom brought along Pokeman cards which were a huge hit with the older boys. I just love the first set of photos where the younger brother is trying to sneak a peek at his brother’s cards. Those are life’s little moments to remember and cherish…

Storybox Art has only a few more spots for a signature family session through the end of this year. If you have your heart set on a session please be sure to get in touch. Please provide a number to contact you as well for us to be able to chat and get to know each other better. If you haven’t “liked” our facebook page please do so to check out sneak peek and other news.

matter of faith

This blog carousel is about hope. Just a little over two weeks ago Jen Burgess Thompson, a photographer friend and mom to two boys was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. She has touched so many lives by sharing her story publicly before and after her surgery. She has motivated so many to take charge of their health and aptly so in the Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. You can read about her journey so far on her blog Am I Still A Girl and also watch this incredible video we won’t be defeated. The video contains beautiful images of Jen and her family captured by three amazing photographers Kevin Kubota, Benjamin Edwards and Craig Strong. Also, in my thoughts is my friend Kerry. Her husband Noel was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in April 2011 which has metastasized to the liver. It is  too late for life saving surgery but Kerry and Noel along with their two beautiful kids are making the best of their time together. They renewed their vows in a beautiful ceremony on their anniversary date of August 18th. Jen and Kerry could use your thoughts, prayers and support. If you would like to donate please visit Jen’s blog and Kerry’s webpage.

For this post of hope I chose to share some images that celebrate Kerry and Jen’s faith in Christianity. Most of my family practices Hinduism, my sister-in-law Christianity and I follow the Buddhist faith which indicates how various religions coexist in India. These photos are from my last year’s trip to India with my son. The first set of images were taken at Basilica of Bom Jesus, a popular church in Old Goa. As one of the oldest churches in India it is also a World Heritage Monument. It symbolizes the spirit of hope that is offered to thousands that walk through the doors and light candles. The hand you see holding the candle is my son’s as we made our own offerings during our visit. The second set of images were taken at a tiny church called St. Joseph’s in Panchgani. It was a beautiful, serene church that my brother took us too. The church was closed when we stopped by yet the groundskeeper was kind enough to open it for us. As you can imagine, it was a perfect opportunity for me to take a few photos 🙂

Please be sure to make your way around the blog carousel to check out various interpretations of hope by amazing photographers around the globe. Next up is Julie Tauro, Kitchener Waterloo Child, Family, and high school senior photographer.

Can’t believe I haven’t shared this session yet! Have been a bit slow with updates on the blog.

I got to photograph little Jude and his family a few weeks back on a gorgeous warm evening. Remember him? I have been photographing him since he was a wee one and have grown to be rather attached to this family. Mom booked his annual session and this time around dad was able to come out for the session. I am so lucky to be in these lovely people’s life and document their real and intimate moments. I can see how much they adore their little guy. And how beautifully they handle him in his few difficult moments without frustration. It speaks volumes of how they are raising their sweet little guy! It was so evident with Jude being so receptive to me so quickly, a relative stranger that sees him once a year.

The session started with him just waking up after a ride out to the east bay from San Francisco. He adjusted pretty quickly to being thrown into a photo session. We explored and played together. Some of us ran and some of us chased those that ran. One of my favorite moments from the session was with little Jude in the driver’s seat of his vintage car. He was having some car troubles and mom just jumped into the frame heels and all to give him a little push. That look of glee on his face was just priceless.

So here you go… the perfect spot, perfect light with the perfect family. What more could one ask for?

If you have been considering a session please don’t hesitate to call or email me. Summer is going by and I only have a few spots available. Am offering a few weekday short story summer sessions. Are you a facebook fan of Storyboxart? It is a great way to keep up with news and updates.

lauri - Alpana, you are really talented at capturing families! Wow! This really is a beautiful family, but I so love your photography.

It's that time again for this month's blog carousel which is a collaboration with talented photographers all around the globe. The theme for this month is laughter. I pulled an old favorite from the archives and re-edited it. You can see my previous edit on canvas here. It made me dig through a bit more to find the pictures of my silly little guy laughing/posing in front of the canvas at our old home. Gotta treasure the old memories!

Up next in the blog carousel is Atlanta's Baby and Child Photographer, the talented Corey Sewell. Also, you can view last month's entries here.

A few from a quick afternoon rendezvous in Palo Alto with my lovely childhood friend Rita, her mom and kids. Rita and I met in eighth grade in India and followed somewhat similar paths as we continued our journey in art pursuing a BFA and MFA. She has been such an inspiration not only through art but as a super mom raising two bright, polite and well-rounded kids. Hope you like the photos!
