the journey is the destination

The title is borrowed from one of my favorite books called The Journey is the Destination: The Journals of Dan Eldon. The book is a rich visual exploration of the young photojournalist’s work before he was killed by an angry mob in Somalia. I bought this book when I chanced upon it at a Borders store during my first years in San Francisco. I had moved to the city on a whim after falling in love with it as a tourist and decided that I had to move out here. It was a period of transition– of me going back to being a student from a full-time paid job. At that time, I was looking at a couple of options for a Masters program in Design. One was to stay in Chicago where I lived at that time and go to the School of Art and Design. The other was to go to the Academy of Art in San Francisco. I picked San Francisco over Chicago, a city I had fallen so in love with during my visit here a few months prior to it. After a short stay at the Academy which didn’t feel like a good fit for me, I went back to work but on a slightly different journey. It was the height of the dot com boom so I got sucked right in….and then out. I loved every minute of it and it was an amazing learning experience to dive into the world of pixels and cyberspace. If you want to take a peek at my really, really, old design site you can see it here.

While updating the bio section for my blog, it made me think about my own transition and journey in photography. The dreams and reflections of where I have come from. Where do I go from here? What is my style? I have seen myself evolve although one thing has been a constant. I have always loved, loved taking pictures of people in their environment (not so much nature) and documenting life in stories. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad, but always real. Recently, someone asked me about my early work and I thought I would share some of it. The pictures below were all shot on 35mm film using a SLR.

Rashmi - Indeed. The journey is the destination.
These are beautiful photographs Alpana. Seeing these and seeing my own film images makes me think more and more of going back to film or at least shooting one roll with film during a session.
I love the instant-gratification of digital but there is nothing quite like the tonality, the depth, the magic of film… along with the workhorse that is photoshop.. it would be a marriage made in heaven. But even if we consider that we can get film like images (or better!) with digital.. the waiting, the slowing down and waiting for the moment, the anticipation of seeing what happened..that is something quite intangible.
Anyway.. I ramble.. you have inspired me to go and scan some film images. Thanks!
xoxo,
Rashmi

These are from a recent family session with Deidre, a local photographer. Aren’t they a just gorgeous family? I had an opportunity to pull out my chair find that they were game to try out. I hope to be doing some chair sessions soon!

He is five!!

And so proud of it! My little guy turned five a few days back and hasn’t stopped talking about it. He will tell anyone who will listen (or not) about turning five. Let’s see…he got an extra toy at the dentist’s office when he told the hygenist it was his birthday. Before you think I am this mean mom to drag him to the dentist on his birthday… he insisted. Really. So far his dentist trips are about the toy at the end of the visit. I am sure it will change at some point. And later in the afternoon, he got some Jelly Beans from the girl at the checkout counter at Trader Joe’s. This is really quite a transformation for him as he used to be a pretty shy kid unwilling to talk to people.

a few pictures of the birthday boy (these are from an outing today)…

and a few of the little pirate with his birthday present which is similar to this cool ship.

Angela - He is one of the most beautiful children I’ve ever seen.

Shellie Wilmott - Hey! Saw the pirate ship!!!!!

Your website looks wonderful…did it get a facelift? I don’t remember it looking so cool!

You are such a talented lady!

Talk to you soon.

The wooden puzzle you see little Ricky sitting on belonged to his dad as a child. Dad asked if I could incorporate the puzzle in the photos and I was more than happy to. The family is moving out to PA for dad to start his MBA program at Wharton in the fall. Ricky grabbed the PA piece right off the puzzle…heh, with a bit of help.

Can you tell I am loving this age? 10 month old little Ricky was such a joy to take pictures of at the family’s Noe Valley home in San Francisco. Such a wonderful, laid back family and so willing to trust me! Here are a few photos for a sneak peek for mom and dad. I am sure you are anxious to see them!

Had to post this one as it made me giggle…. This picture is so reflective of my style of work. I love capturing life as I see it…candid moments in your life. Not traditional, posed photos but your crawler on the go, your active or squirmy toddler captured as they are at that age. These are the wonderful memories that will bring you back to that time in your life with your little ones!

Rashmi - Such a cute baby!
That photo would make an awesome moving card!

happy birthday kally!

my wonderful friend! Sorry I missed your birthday celebration today… my day didn’t quite go as I planned. At the least, I wanted to post this for you on your special day.

When people asked how old she was, she would say 1009365, more or less, because she was so glad to be alive that she counted every day a birthday.

She had some disagreement from her knees about the actual figures though. . .
