The golden girl

Two golden hours somewhere between sunrise and sunset. Both are set with 60 diamond minutes. No reward is offered. They are gone forever.
-Horace Mann

I had a chance to photograph this amazing little girl on our vacation in SoCal. Her mom is an amazing photographer and we got to meet up for a little beach mixr. She is such an amazing subject and actually stays put unlike my five year old distracted boy! I am still catching up on posting from recent sessions and editing photos after coming back from our vacation. I should be getting in touch with you soon if you are a client waiting on proofs or prints. 🙂

super chubb | san francisco bay area baby photographer

We are back! I have so much catching up to do 🙂 but couldn’t resist posting a few pics for a sneak peek from my quick session while on vacation. Add to the craziness my computer was in the shop for a few days so I was having major withdrawal.

How could I resist this 10 month old bundle of chubb? Such a super model and sweet baby! She belongs to my friend S that I have known since my impoverished student days back in Kalamazoo, MI. We don’t see each other often…or haven’t, but when we do we can pick up where we left off. S and her beautiful family showed us a great time in SoCal…thanks so much! Also, S’s mom is such a wonderful person and the sweetest grandma. I also knew S’s dad who passed away a few years back and he holds a special place in my heart! He was such an amazing person and I loved our long conversations about art and life.

S + S, I hope you like these pictures! For the family pics, can you believe they coordinated their outfits in all of fifteen minutes?

smita - Super Job Alpana, The pictures are amazing. Anika looks stunning. Our family looks delightful at the park. I loved the picture with mom the most. Can’t wait to see the rest .

I can’t thank you enough for taking the time ( that too after a loooong day at Disney) to patiently take pictures of all of us. . …add to that waiting patiently for us to be in the right moods at the right time in the right frame !!! I am pleased with the outcome and would love to repeat this sometime.

Wish we could spend more time with you and Kip and the adorable lil superhero R.

Hope to see the rest of your trip pictures soon too.

Smita

Kimberly Kyle - She is so precious! Beautiful captures.

not my everyday shoot…

with such a large group of people, um, thirteen… five year olds with an abundance of energy and craziness. Yeah, and mostly boy energy. From my own experience, my one boy makes it crazy enough and then to have eleven… thank goodness for the girl power and the cheering parents. You can’t tell but the kids cracked up watching one of the parents do a crazy butt shake. I wish I could have gotten a picture of that 🙂

Anyway, this was our fun little shoot for a special something for the preschool teachers…shhh. It is R’s last day at preschool today!

everyday superhero

There is just something so magical about superheros. He got this really cool cape as a birthday present from his friend Arjun. Such a perfect gift for my little superhero. He know names of more superheros than I do. He loves being the good guy fighting the bad guys. I am not sure where it all started but he has loved superheros for a while now. There couldn’t have been a better moment to document this phase in his life. I know, I know, I am all about photo ops. Although, it seems that these phases go by so quickly…so it had to be now or never!

Shellie Wilmott - These are the memories that last a lifetime!

Krithiga - Oh wow, amazing pictures! I’m glad he liked it 🙂

Get professional photos of your kids

I had seen this article on the Real Simple website a while back and have been meaning to share it. I can relate to it so much. Growing up, my father hired professionals to take pictures of us and they have served to be wonderful memories of those moments in our life. Additionally, he was a photography enthusiast himself and captured us naturally– to whom I can attribute my love of candid photography. And then I have to mention my mom who is an amazing artist– to whom I can attribute my love for art. I thought I’d share an old photo of my sister and me most likely taken by my father. Can you guess which one is me? Ha, don’t we look so happy…

Note To Self
Get Professional Photos of Your Children

I’ve never forgotten an invaluable piece of advice that I heard from an older friend right after my first child was born. She told me, “One of my greatest regrets about my children’s childhoods was that I didn’t have more professional pictures taken.”

“You didn’t take many pictures?” I asked.

“I took tons of pictures,” she said, “but the fact is, professional photographs are so much better than even the best snapshots.”

I absolutely agree—professional photos are better. And keeping her advice in mind, ever since my daughters were born, I’ve been zealous about getting their photos taken professionally at least once a year.

While it’s a lot of fun (and also a pain) to take pictures myself, it’s terrific to have some pictures that are truly excellent. These photos don’t take the place of the on-the-spot pictures that I take myself—I still take scads of photos at birthday parties, first days of school, on the slide, with a popsicle—but these pictures memorialize my children’s childhoods in a different way.

Plus they make great family gifts. I can never figure out a good present for the grandparents and great-grandparents, but they always love to get a really great photograph—especially the relatives who don’t often get a chance to see the girls in person.

Also, research shows that one way to boost your happiness is to reflect on happy times, and looking at photographs helps keep memories more vivid.

It’s a splurge, of course. Professional photos aren’t cheap.

However, I figure that the money I spend on these photographs will strengthen family bonds, enhance happy memories, and capture the fleeting moments of childhood. They give me more pleasure than practically any other purchases that I make. That strikes me as pretty good happiness bang for the buck.

A friend’s family had another great photography tradition. For her whole life, at every milestone, her parents took a picture of her and her brother sitting exactly the same way on their front stoop. It’s fascinating to see them change through the years. Along the same lines, the artist Nicholas Nixon took a photograph of his wife and her three sisters once a year for 33 years. The collection of these photographs, The Brown Sisters, is riveting.

Getting professional photos take is a great example of the tiresome fact that happiness takes thought and effort. These photographs are easy to arrange; in the scheme of things, not terribly expensive; contribute greatly to our family happiness—and yet it probably never would have occurred to me to do it if my friend hadn’t suggested it.

Have you ever had your child’s professional photograph taken? Did you think it was worth the expense and trouble?
